Homeless in Athens

SONG
Ocean Will Be
by Gabriel Yacoub et Bruno Coulais

Even though voices be quiet, slumbering in deep-sea trenches
one can hear a rumbling thunder merging into the endless skies

dancing for joy
in a wind of splendour
that will keep blowing
for evermore

crawling through waves, pebbles and seaweed, entwined amongst the sand
shades of the unknown with no equation, shells on the wasteland
from the floor of the ocean, fathoms of greatness, a place where no man can be

the truth of the ocean
the open space
light out, wanderlust
for evermore

ancient monsters, fairy fish will arise from the dawn of time

restless souls of sailors of days gone-by keep wandering in liquid peace
deep in the dark, ploughing the sea, reach out to eternity
and none of them will call the beasts other than by their own true name

the widow will wait
for the sun to come out
the ocean will be
for evermore

ancient monsters, fairy fish will arise from the dawn of time
some of them threatened, some extinct, dissolved in mystery

shipwrecks and prayers
banners of old
storms and man
for evermore

ancient monsters, fairy fish will arise from the dawn of time
some of them threatened, some extinct, dissolved in mystery
many more will be spared to tell the endless tale of water and man
of giving and taking, teaching and learning, of hunters and of prey

dancing for joy
in a wind of splendour
that will be blowing
for evermore

The poor human being...

SONG

POETS OF THE FALL: Roses
I've walked the distance,
I paid my dues and tried to have a go at what I thought I knew was real,
held no appeal

I've been to places, I've seen the tidings,
I bought a book of rules for every coin that I could steal
And so I came to gaze upon the stars, when they were yet unborn
And consequently, tear at my old scars, and the mask I had outworn
So when I'm crying alone
Yeah, when I'm cold as a dying stone

Grow me a garden of roses
Paint me the colors of sky and rain
Teach me to speak with their voices
Show me the way and I'll try again

I've heard the rumors, started fires,
I sowed a sordid lot of plays for keeps for what I need, behold
the demons that I freed
I've tried my best at wearing the hard hat,
but healing doesn't seem to happen when you hide away the seed

And so I came across the medicine man, and he showed me what I'd forlorn
For if I'm stayed it happens by my own hand, and my own voice full of scorn

So when I'm crying alone
Yeah, when I'm cold as a dying stone
Grow me a garden of roses
Paint me the colors of sky and rain
Teach me to speak with their voices
Show me the way and I'll try again

Without you I'm nothing at all
And life has the face of a morbid game
With you nothing seems impossible
It all seems to fit the frame

So when I'm crying alone
Yeah, when I'm cold as a dying stone

Grow me a garden of roses
Paint me the colors of sky and rain
Teach me to speak with their voices
Show me the way and I'll try again

Taare Zameen Par = Like stars on earth (film)

Taare Zameen Par is a 2007 Bollywood drama film directed and procuced by Aamir Khan.
The film explores the life and imagination of 8-year-old Ishaan (Darsheel Safary). Although he excels in the arts, his poor academic performance leads his parents to send him to a boarding school. Ishaan's new art teacher (Aamir Khan) suspects that he is dyslexic, and helps him to overcome his disability.

The film made its theatrical debut in India on 21 December 2007. Less than two years later Walt Disney Home Entertainment released an international edition DVD titled Like Stars on Earth, marking the first purchase of distribution rights for an Indian film by a global company.

Taare Zameen Par has received several awards, including the Filmfare Best Film Award for 2008 and the 2008 National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare. It was India's official entry for the 2009 Academy Awards Best Foreign Film, and the film's failure to progress to the nominations short list sparked a debate about why no Indian film has ever won an Oscar. Media outlets made comparisons between Taare Zameen Par and the British drama Slumdog Millionaire, which won several Oscars that same year.

On Friday March 18th, the pupils of 3rd Upper Secondary school "Miltos  Kountouras" participating in the eTwinning project "Dyslexia and Social Exclusion" attended the film in IT LAB. More details about the film HERE.

Ms St. Soubassi, english teacher in our school, prepared the students to watch the film. She coordinated the discussion on the subject "social exclusion & dyslexic pupils" and evaluated the worksheets of the children.

Here it is the worksheet:

Worksheet: side 1
worksheet: side 2

On Monday March 21th, in the IT LAB the pupils will watch some other videos about dyslexia, will search for famous dyslexic people and will draw paintings,  cartoons and designs about dyslexic people, their attitudes and their relationships with the other.

DYSLEXIA and SOCIAL EXCLUSION
We watched the dyslexia film and noticed the following:
Children with learning difficulties are threatened by social exclusion because:
  • They are left behind
  • They can’t participate in class activities
  • They have no friends
Also, the hero is a dyslexic boy who is:
skillful, not very dexterous, adventurous, brave, emotionally intelligent, artistic, sensitive, creative, lonely, detached, aggressive, defiant, a liar, sometimes truant, nervous and a pet lover.
His talents are that he can make puzzles, paint, make fireworks and orientate himself. He can also understand poetry, although he can't read, write and calculate. On the other hand, he can’t memorise and answer when pressed or understand istructions.  He can't focus and play ball games.

He feels happy when he can freely explore and create. He feels frustrated when he fails, angry, stressed, lonely and also abandoned, sad and depressed. His family feel confused, apprehensive, condemned, disappointed, angry and guilty.

How can we help him? We can try and understand him, accept him as he is, seek expert support for him and us and, more importantly, not insult him but support him. We should explain things in his way and provide special education and last protect him from being bullied.

Bethel association in Tallin works with people on the streets. So this is often how information gets passed around. We meet people on the street and they pass the word on, so when we give out food packages we hear about other families in difficulty
"Do not get depressed. Inevitably, everything will work out", Ljudmilla said.

Human Planet

The stories aren't determined by skin color, only by the people whose survival is intimately entwined with their natural surroundings. We care about human being means we care about the environment.
