Getting Out of Poverty: Slovakia

This homeless couple Augustin and Jelka are playing roles as actors. They really like the fact that they are part of a team in the theatre. Everyone contributes to the end result. There they all have to pull together to ensure that the audience enjoys the play. A well-performed play makes them all happy.

Ljudmilla from Tallin/Estonia

Ljudmilla, along with her husband and four children, live in social housing in North Tallinn. Her husband lost his job and the family went into a spiral of debt.

Bethel association in Tallin works with people on the streets. So this is often how information gets passed around. We meet people on the street and they pass the word on, so when we give out food packages we hear about other families in difficulty
"Do not get depressed. Inevitably, everything will work out", Ljudmilla said.

Femia from Hague/ Netherlands

Femia is 88 years old and lives in The Hague, in the Netherlands. After her husband died a year ago, she had to take care of her financial situation herself. And soon the debts piled up.

A government subsidised organisation of welfare workers helped Femia.
"Everything is going well now. Semret is taking care of everything. She checks my mail and the bills that come in. I’m very grateful for that.", she said.

Yildirim  from Copenhagen/ Denmark

Yildirim doesn’t often go back to his old neighborhood in Copenhagen. It was here he got involved in the criminal activities that got him into prison. Today, Yildirim tries to stay out of trouble. Cafe-Exit, an organisation helps him get out of social exclusion, get their life back on track by looking for an education, a job, a place to stay. He lives with girlfriend, who is excpecting his baby.

Having a mental health condition, Manuel dealt with a lot of problems and ended up homeless. For more than 12 years he lived on the street, isolated from everything and everyone.

Despite an improvement in overall living standards over the past decade, poverty and social exclusion remain major issues in most countries, with substantial differences across the EU.
